Overview

About the Graduate Visa

Last reviewed 27 August 2026 by Jan Bejcek, Registered Migration Agent MARN 0965239.

Quick answer: the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) lets eligible graduates of an Australian institution live, work and study in Australia for between 18 months and 5 years, depending on stream and qualification. No job offer is required, work rights are unrestricted, and eligible family members can be included.

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) lets recent graduates of eligible Australian qualifications live, work and study in Australia for a period after their course. It is a common bridge between study and a longer term skilled or employer sponsored pathway.

There are three streams, and the one that applies to you depends on your qualification: Post-Higher Education Work for degree graduates, Post-Vocational Education Work for associate degree, diploma or trade graduates, and Second Post-Higher Education Work for eligible graduates who studied and lived in a designated regional area. We map the graduate visa into your wider plan, so it moves you toward the outcome you want rather than being a dead end.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who is the Graduate visa for?
Recent graduates of eligible Australian qualifications who want to live and work in Australia after study. There are three streams: Post-Higher Education Work for degree graduates, Post-Vocational Education Work for associate degree, diploma or trade graduates, and Second Post-Higher Education Work for eligible regional graduates applying for further time.
How long does the Graduate visa last?
It depends on your stream and qualification. Post-Higher Education Work generally runs 2 to 3 years (up to 5 for Hong Kong or BNO passport holders). Post-Vocational Education Work runs up to 18 months. Second Post-Higher Education Work adds 1 to 2 further years for eligible regional graduates.
Can I work full time on a 485?
Yes, all three streams carry full work rights and you are free to find your own employment.
When do I need to apply?
Generally within 6 months of your qualification being awarded, and you must hold an eligible visa (usually a Student visa held within the last 6 months, or a bridging visa linked to one). Exact timing depends on your stream, so confirm with us before your current visa expires.
Do I need a job offer?
No job offer is required to apply.
What are the streams?
Post-Higher Education Work (degree graduates), Post-Vocational Education Work (associate degree, diploma or trade graduates with a skills assessment), and Second Post-Higher Education Work (further time for eligible regional graduates). You must choose your stream correctly, as it cannot be changed after you apply.
Can my family come with me?
Yes. Eligible family members can be included in your application, or can apply later as subsequent entrants once your visa is granted.
Does the Graduate visa lead to permanent residency?
Not on its own, but it is a common bridge to skilled or employer sponsored pathways. We can plan the next step.
Do I need English for the 485?
Yes, unless you hold a passport from the UK, the US, Canada, New Zealand or Ireland. Otherwise you need an approved English test result from the 12 months before you apply. Minimum scores vary by test and we confirm the current thresholds with you.
Do I need health insurance?
Yes, you and any family members included in the application need adequate health insurance for the duration of your stay.
Can I study on a Graduate visa?
Yes, you can live, work and study while holding this visa, though you must arrange your own employment.
Can I apply if I studied online or offshore?
You must meet the Temporary Graduate visa study requirement, which sets rules about the length and location of your study. Some COVID period online study still counts. We check this against your specific enrolment history.
What if my course is not eligible?
We can check your qualification against the requirements before you apply.
